Kentish Town Sports Centre, England

Dating from 1898, these former public baths underwent a £23 million restoration and refurbishment project. Now transformed, the diverse community of Kentish Town can enjoy a modern, state of the art sports facility with original features that hint at its Victorian heritage.

A viewing gallery overlooking the 25 meter Grafton Pool allows parents to observe their children during play and lessons. However, other swimmers, for example, those of Muslim faith, require more privacy when using the facilities.

Solutions

A smart glass partition provides a safe, efficient solution in this case. Parents can monitor children comfortably from the viewing gallery during open lessons. However, in its opaque state, this innovative partition restricts visibility when discretion is required.

Sanitation and hygiene standards are also a priority for public leisure spaces. Smart glass is an easy to clean, low maintenance surface that can be disinfected regularly, making it the perfect material for these environments.

The Globe Of Science And Innovation, Cern

The tallest timber structure in the world, this sustainable globe is a beacon of enlightenment and the hub of CERN’s education and outreach program.

The Globe serves to inspire inquiring minds with presentations and exhibitions on cutting edge scientific and technological discoveries. These events require access to light and dark on demand, a considerable challenge gave the volume of natural light present in the space.

Solutions

Our love for the core scientific and innovative values of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) makes this project an incredibly satisfying project. Appropriately, it is a manipulation of particle physics, and smart glass can be adjusted to precisely control the light entering the building.

We collaborated with our customers to design a custom frame system, and while retaining the original glass, electronically switchable smart glass was installed on the curved skylight and central vortex of The Globe. Now, with a light touch, darkness will come, making lighting demonstration possible. The architectural integrity of this unique and groundbreaking building will not be compromised at all, and the application of this innovative technology is consistent with the customer ’s reason for existence.

The East Wintergarden, London, England

A shimmering sculpture of glass and steel, the elegant arch of the East Wintergarden provides a perfect counterpoint to the linear landscape of Canary Wharf.

Leiyao smart glass was approached to create a modern, minimalist entrance to complement the striking architecture, preserve natural light, and deliver privacy on demand.

Solutions

A combination of revolving and double doors were fitted with individually controlled, toughened electronic glass panels creating a bespoke entrance to this prestigious venue and providing planners with a stylish and sophisticated means of tailoring privacy levels for each event.

In its opaque state Smart glass also works as a high-contrast rear projection screen. This additional functionality allows organizers to further customize the space by projecting images and event branding onto the entrance.

The exquisite finish of this multifunctional and modern material perfectly complements the clean, minimalist lines of this unique structure.

“The venue looks amazing, it really comes to life.”
